Cesária Évora passed away today at the age of 70. The "Barefoot Diva", who always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, on her native island of São Vicente, Cape Verde.
Cesária Évora had retired in September because of health problems. In recent years she has had several operations, including open-heart surgery last year.
