Oscar Wilde's Birthday!

Today we celebrate Oscar Wilde's 156th birthday. The much celebrated writer and poet was born in Dublin on October 16th, 1854, and is nowadays remembered for his plays as well as his imprisonment for "gross indecency with other men" and early death, at the age of forty-six.

In order to celebrate his birthday I decided to post the first ever Oscar Wilde play I read (in English class, at the age of 12 or 13), but even today I keep The importance of being Earnest and still find it amusing!

This play follows Jack, a country bachelor who goes by the name of Ernest when he pops into the city, and his friend Algernon, who seeks a thrill by becoming Ernest in the country. Jack proposes to Gwendolen Fairfax while Algernon, posing as Jack's wicked brother Ernest, falls in love with Jack's ward, Cecily.

Quote: "The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either, and modern literature a complete impossibility!"
